What is Trauma-Informed Massage?

Trauma-informed massage is an approach to bodywork that recognizes how trauma—medical, emotional, or life-threatening—can affect your  nervous system and the way you may experience touch. Rather than assuming the body is “ready” for standard massage, we work together to prioritize your sense of safety, choice, and collaboration.

In trauma-informed massage, you are in control at all times. Touch is consent-based, pressure is adapted, and communication is clear and ongoing. Sessions move at a pace that supports nervous system regulation, helping your body feel safe enough to relax rather than overwhelmed or guarded.

This approach avoids forcing release or pushing through discomfort. Instead, we honor your body’s protective responses and work gently with them. For many people—especially those who have experienced medical trauma, cancer treatment, chronic stress, or significant life events—trauma-informed massage can feel more supportive, calming, and effective than traditional techniques.

At its heart, trauma-informed massage is not about specific techniques, but a way of being present  with your body: with respect, attention, and responsiveness to what you  need  in the moment.
